PC Server System/390 integrated client/server
application development environment

Two computing environments in one cost-effective solution

Highlights

A System/390® microprocessor Provides the S/390® capability to run OS/390® MVS/ESA, tm VM/ESA® or VSE/ESAT tm operating system.

The new PC Server features a high performance Pentium tm processor running OS/2 Warp Server capable of multitasking. windowing and editing on workstations to help improve productivity throughout the organization. Supports advanced LAN functions.

Combined strengths pict of computer with team inset Provides an integrated client/server application development environment (OS/2 and S/390 development and system management tools). Entry S/390 offering replaces older System/370 systems and provides a cost-competitive server platform for Network Computing MVS/ESA 5.22 or OS/390 provides X/open XPG4 base certification hybrid capabilities unmatched by any IBM competitor

Integrated client/server application development environment The PC Server S/390 is an integrated system that will enable your developers and system programmers to perform their work more efficiently and cost-effectively The PC Server S/390 provides you with an independent image of an S/390 environment for work groups of application developers or system programmers. This can reduce system contention and won't interrupt production applications on host systems.

The PC Server S/390 can also be used as a workbench to test applications for susceptibility to year 2000 problems. Even though the millennium is still a few years away, the year 2000 is starting to show up in application data fields now. This unique server solution provides an excellent standalone environment to inspect application code or test the application itself if the source code is unavailable. Application data can be modified and the system clock can be changed as often as necessary without fear of impact to production environments.

Advanced LAN solution On the PC Server side of this equation, you'll also gain the benefits of high-performance and scalable networking.

In addition to supporting S/390 applications, it will also support OS/2 applications including client PCs you may already be using. PC Server S/390 provides file, print or application serving or can function as a client running LAN requester software for coexistence in an established LAN. This makes it easy for you to integrate the S/390 into a network, and allow users to access VM/ESA, VSE/ESA and MVS/ESA and OS/390 data. For System/370tmusers:

A solution that makes the move to S/390 more affordable For organizations that depend on proven IBM S/370TM' applications to drive their business, the PC Server S/390 offers a cost-effective way to make the transition to next-generation S/390 computing.

With the powerful S/390 microprocessor, you can run your S/370 and S/390 applications.

As a replacement for S/370s, the PC Server S/390 provides:

  • The ability to stay on the same architecture
  • A low-cost, higher-function alternative to S/370 mainframes
  • The ability to run S/370 and S/390 applications
  • The combination of a S/390 and a PC Server in a single system
  • A way to build on existing skills, minimizing retraining

For network computing IBM is fully committed to help our customers leverage their investments in S/390 while allowing full participation in the network computing environment.

For S/390 customers who need to reengineer their business, PC ServerS/390 provides an ideal platform to distribute S/390 applications and data. It can provide S/390 remote, unattended operations that translate into greater system availability, lower communication costs, greater configuration flexibility and simpler operation.

For the open/distributed LAN environment, IBM PC Server S/390 can function as a client to a host server or as a server for the clients in the LAN. For example, it can be a printer server, a file server, or an Internet server. The hybrid capabilities (S/390 annd OS/2) are unmatched by any of IBM's competitors

Enhance your investment The PC Server S/390 includes OS/2, so you'll be able to use the full range of productivity programs available for this environment. At the same time, you can take advantage of the S/390 instruction set, which will allow you to execute most of your existing applications. This means both your end users and technical staff will be able to continue to work as before enjoying more flexibility and productivity

Microprocessor technology consumes less electrical power. Together with the elimination of air conditioning and lower maintenance costs, this may allow you to justify your PC Server S/390 investment with these savings alone.

In addition, you'll be well positioned for future expansion using low-cost, scalable, high-capacity, high-availability PC disk subsystems that include hot-swap with RAID technology models
